Massachusetts construction supervisors must renew their licenses every two years. But before they can renew, they must complete continuing education (CE). The number of CE hours needed depends on the construction supervisor license (CSL) type.

This blog describes the requirements to renew, reviews the different CE options, and provides links to other helpful resources. Don’t let your CSL lapse — follow our renewal guide to stay compliant!

Requirements for Renewing in MA

Before you start thinking about renewing, confirm your current CSL expiration date. For most people, it’s on their birthday. The Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections (OPSI) Division of Occupational Licensure should send a renewal reminder 60 days before your expiration date. It’s best to start the process right away to avoid any processing delays. OPSI says to allow five weeks for application processing.

Thankfully, the renewal process is relatively simple. After you complete your CE, you can renew online, by mail, or in person. There are currently two fees: one for licenses that have expired for less than one year and another higher fee for licenses expired for two years or less.

Continuing Education Requirements

Different license types have different CE requirements. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Unrestricted construction supervisor: 12 hours
  • Restricted (One- and Two-Family Dwellings) construction supervisor: 10 hours
  • Specialty construction supervisor (masonry, roofing, insulation, etc.): six hours

When selecting CE courses, pick a provider that is state-approved and offers courses that cover the following topics:

  • Code Review: Four (4) hours for restricted and unrestricted CSL and two (2) hours for specialty licenses
  • Workplace Safety: One (1) hour
  • Business Practices/Workers’ Compensation: One (1) hour
  • Energy (except Demolition Specialty License): One (1) hour
  • Lead Safe Practices (first renewal cycle only): One (1) hour

Unfortunately, you cannot complete all your CE classes online. All license types require at least some in-person classroom training.

Currently, unrestricted construction supervisors can take six hours online and need to complete the remaining six in a classroom.

Restricted (One- and Two-Family Dwellings) construction supervisors can take four hours online and finish the last six in a classroom.

This online and in-classroom split is why we offer course packages that fulfill both requirements. Visit our Massachusetts CSL page, select your license type, and then find a classroom date and location that works best for you. Our courses are state-approved (CSL-CD-0032), and the online portions are self-paced and accessible from any device.

Your Application to Renew

Before completing the renewal application, make sure you have your CE certificate of completion and a way to pay the fee.

Renewing online is a simple solution that uses the MyLicenseOne Portal. Sign in (or create an account), follow the on-screen instructions, and pay the fee.

If you want to renew your CSL with a paper application, you can request one and email it to OPSI-info@mass.gov. You can also renew in person at 1000 Washington St., Suite 710, Boston, MA 02118.

Renewal FAQs

How will the state know I have completed my CE?

We report your CE to OPSI for you on the business day following your course completion.

Can I take the same continuing education class twice and still receive credit for it?

You can purchase and repeat the same class if it is in a different licensing cycle. You cannot earn credits for the same course taken twice during one licensing cycle.

Are your online courses approved by the State of Massachusetts?

Yes! All courses list their approval numbers.

How long do I have access to my courses?

We allow unlimited, 24/7 course access for six months. If you need additional time, please contact our offices to arrange an extension (note: a fee may apply).

Once I start an online course, can I leave and restart it later?

Our courses are available online 24/7, and you can log in and log out at any time during the course. If you are in the middle of a course but need to take a break, simply log out. When you log back in, you can re-enter the same lesson you were just taking.
